We were called in to this snooker club in the Colinton area of Edinburgh a few years ago. And as you can see the carpets defiantly needed a clean! Those dark black patches you can see on this commercial gade carpet is what is commonly known in the carpet cleaning industry as “black top”.

Black top is a combination of grease, oil and sugars that are found in spilt drinks and foods. Mainly drinks in this setting, and then the sticky residues will attract the dirt to the carpet. This can either be spilt or, walked in from the kitchen from the waiters and waitresses. This is a very common sight in any busy restaurants, bars and clubs up and down the country and there is no real way to completely preventing it. So regular carpet cleaning is advised.

To remove this type of soilage we spray apply a hot solution of enzyme detergent, and we boost this formula with a solvent based cleaner. Work this solution into the pile with a contra rotating brush machine (the machine with blue brushes in the photo), to break down the grease and oils in the carpet.

We then extract the carpet with our powerful hot water extraction machine. We rinse with a wool safe acidic side rinse. This leaves the carpet PH natural and soft to the touch. As well as restoring the natural colours and luster of the carpet.

From the photo, I hope you can see we managed to successfully fully remove the red wine stain from the carpet. After the stain removal work was complete. We showed our client the result and invited them to inspect the area to make sure they were happy with the work. Once we got the thumbs up, we finished of the job by cleaning the rest of the carpet using our five step, hot water extraction system.

The black sludge that comes from leaky radiators is called Magnetite. This black substance is basically dissolved and rusted pipework of the central heating system. It develops when air and water react with ferrous components inside of the radiator. 

In the photo below, a plumber and heating engineer who’s a regular customer of ours called us on behalf of his client. They had this unsightly black mark on their wool carpet that had happened over the weekend when their radiator leaked. The job was in the Blackhall area of Edinburgh. Thankfully the client hadn’t tried any DIY attempts to remove the stain from the carpet. Excessive scrubbing and the shop bought cleaning products can sometimes make things worse!

Imagine spilling a full cup of black coffee on your brand new, newly laid wool carpet! Well, this is exactly what happed to this client based in The Grange district of Edinburgh.

The new wool carpet on their stair case and landing was all of 2 days old before the incident happened.

Luckly, they didn’t attempt to clean it themselves with a shop bought stain remover, and making things a lot worse but instead called DirtMaster. Off the shelf stain removers are generally no wool safe, and can permanently damage wool carpets and can also set stains in. It’s always best to call a professional carpet cleaner when dealing with stains like this and especially important when you have wool carpets.

Using our wool safe carpet cleaning stain removers, we managed to remove all of the coffee from the carpet and the stain was vastly reduced. After rinsing the stain remover and coffee out of the carpet, we then applied a mild hydrogen peroxide solution, applied heat (a hair dryer) and managed to remove the stain completely. As you can image the customer was over the moon!

We then followed up with a full cleaning of the stair carpet using a wool safe acid rinse product and then applied a stain guard to the carpets. The acid side carpet cleaning solution helps the protector bond to the wool fibers of the carpet. This protection will help with the longevity of the carpet and protect the carpet from any spillages in the future.
